The only thing I changed between each generation was the parameters at the end. The four results looked like they came from four completely different photographers working in four completely different visual traditions. One looked like editorial fashion photography. One looked like a raw documentary portrait. One was a heavily stylised artistic interpretation. One was a clean, literal commercial headshot.
Same words. Completely different images. The difference was entirely in the parameters.
This is the part of Midjourney that most beginner guides either skip over or reduce to a quick reference table with no real explanation of what each setting actually does or why it matters. That leaves most users with one hand tied behind their back — using a tool that has extraordinary creative control available and accessing maybe twenty percent of it.

Also For Instagram Reels, TikTok content, Pinterest pins, and mobile wallpapers, use –ar 9:16. For Instagram feed posts optimised for the grid layout, use –ar 4:5. And For cinematic, film-style, or ultra-wide compositions, use –ar 21:9. For A4 portrait documents, posters, and book covers, use –ar 3:4.
Make setting –ar the first thing you add to every prompt before you think about any other parameter. It takes two seconds and changes everything about how Midjourney approaches the generation.
–v or –version (Model Version)

The version parameter tells Midjourney which model to use for your generation. This matters more than most guides acknowledge because different versions have genuinely different aesthetic qualities, strengths, and optimal prompt approaches. A prompt that works beautifully on one version may produce disappointing results on another.
The Current Version Landscape in 2026
V8.1 is the newest and fastest model as of May 2026, released officially on midjourney.com on April 30, 2026, and now available on Discord as well. According to Midjourney’s official version documentation, V8.1 renders standard jobs approximately four to five times faster than earlier versions. It follows prompts more closely, handles fine details with improved accuracy, and introduces HD image generation at native 2K resolution via the –hd flag. V8.1 is the current cutting-edge option for users who want the fastest generation and the highest quality ceiling, with the understanding that its default aesthetic skews toward a more familiar V7-inspired look.
V8.0 Alpha launched March 17, 2026 and introduced the core V8 architecture — five times faster than V7, native 2K resolution, dramatically improved text rendering, and a completely rewritten coherence engine for complex multi-element scenes. V8.0 Alpha remains available at alpha.midjourney.com for a limited time while V8.1 becomes the primary V8 model. Midjourney has indicated V8.0 will be decommissioned after V8.1 has been established.
The Previous Released
V7 was released April 3, 2025 and became the default model on June 17, 2025. It held that position until V8.1’s release in April 2026. V7 introduced Draft Mode, Omni Reference, and significantly improved handling of human anatomy — particularly hands and bodies — that had been a persistent weakness in earlier versions. The V7 prompt structure is extremely well-documented at this point, with an enormous community knowledge base of what works and what does not.
V6.1 was released July 30, 2024 and was the default until June 16, 2025. It remains relevant because the vast majority of published Midjourney prompt guides, tutorials, and community resources were built around V6.1. If you find a prompt online that was written for V6.1, testing it on V8.1 will produce different results — sometimes better, sometimes not. Specifying –v 6.1 in an older prompt ensures it runs on the version it was optimised for.
To specify a version, add –v 8.1 or –v 7 or –v 6.1 at the end of your prompt. If you do not specify a version, Midjourney defaults to its current default model — which as of May 2026 is V8.1 on the main website.
–stylize or –s (Artistic Interpretation)

The stylize parameter is one of the most powerful creative controls in Midjourney and one of the most misunderstood. It controls how strongly Midjourney applies its own aesthetic intelligence and artistic preferences to your prompt — the degree to which the model expresses its own visual sensibility versus producing a literal, precise interpretation of your words.
At –s 0, Midjourney produces the most literal interpretation of your prompt possible. At –s 1000, Midjourney applies its maximum aesthetic interpretation. The output is dramatically stylised, visually striking, and strongly reflects the model’s own aesthetic sensibility. Your prompt still guides the general direction, but Midjourney makes aggressive compositional, lighting, and colour choices that may diverge significantly from what you literally described. This produces the most visually impressive and surprising results but is the hardest to control predictably.
The Sweet Spot Values for Different Work Types
For photorealistic photography where accuracy matters most — product shots, portrait photography, architectural imagery — use –s 0 to 100 combined with –style raw. For general content creation where you want quality Midjourney output but reasonable prompt adherence — blog illustrations, social media content, marketing materials — use –s 200 to 400. This range gives you Midjourney’s visual quality and compositional intelligence while still following your description closely enough to be reliably on-brief. For artistic, experimental, or conceptual work where you want Midjourney to express maximum creativity — concept art, creative illustration, experimental visual exploration — use –s 600 to 1000.
–chaos or –c (Variation Between Results)

The chaos parameter controls how different the four images in a single generation are from each other. It is one of the most practically useful parameters for different stages of a creative workflow, and understanding when to use high versus low chaos values changes how efficiently you can work toward a specific visual goal.
At –c 0, the four generated images are tightly similar. They represent four close interpretations of the same prompt — useful when you have a clear, specific vision you are trying to execute and you want four high-quality attempts at that same concept. The similarity means you are more likely to get at least one that closely matches your intention, and the variations between them are subtle enough to be useful for fine-tuning a specific look.
At –c 100, the four generated images are dramatically different from each other. They explore wildly different compositional approaches, lighting interpretations, style variations, and visual possibilities within the space of your prompt. High chaos is most valuable in the exploratory phase of a project — when you are not yet sure which visual direction you want to commit to, and you want to see a genuinely diverse range of possibilities before narrowing down. It is less useful when you have a specific vision and want consistent execution.
The most effective workflow is to start with moderate to high chaos — around 50 to 70 — when beginning a new prompt to explore the visual space, then progressively reduce chaos as you refine your prompt toward the specific result you are targeting. By the time you are generating final production images, a chaos value of 10 to 20 gives you four slightly varied but consistently high-quality interpretations of your refined prompt.
–quality or –q (Render Detail and Coherence)
The quality parameter controls the amount of rendering computation Midjourney applies to each image. Higher quality settings produce more detailed, finely rendered output at the cost of longer generation time and, in V8, additional GPU time costs.
The standard quality setting is –q 1, which is the default for all generations. It produces the full Midjourney output quality for most use cases and is appropriate for the majority of content creation, exploration, and production work. Setting –q 0.25 or –q 0.5 produces faster, lower-detail generations useful for rapid iteration when you are testing prompt concepts and do not need production-quality output for every test. Setting –q 2 produces additional detail and refinement, particularly noticeable in complex textures, fine details, and intricate compositional elements.
V8 introduced –q 4, a new quality mode that provides additional image coherence specifically for complex scenes with many elements. When your prompt describes an intricate composition — multiple figures, detailed environments, complex lighting setups — –q 4 helps the model maintain visual consistency and coherence across the entire image. It costs four times the normal GPU time, so use it selectively for final production images that genuinely require that level of compositional complexity rather than as a default setting.
–no (Negative Prompts)
The –no parameter tells Midjourney specifically what to exclude from the generated image. It is one of the most practically useful parameters for fixing consistent problems in your outputs and is consistently underused by beginners who try to solve exclusion problems through positive prompt additions instead.
When Midjourney keeps adding an unwanted element — crowds to a landscape scene you want empty, text to a clean product shot, deformed hands to a portrait, a specific colour that clashes with your intended palette — using –no is almost always faster and more reliable than trying to describe your way around the problem by adding more positive content to the main prompt.
The most commonly useful –no additions by category are as follows. For clean product and commercial photography: –no text, watermarks, logos, people, shadows. For human portrait work: –no deformed hands, extra fingers, multiple people, blurry backgrounds (if you specifically need sharp background). Also For landscape and environment work: –no people, tourists, signs, text, modern elements (if working in a historical or natural aesthetic). And For illustration and graphic design: –no photorealism, photography style, blurry elements, gradient backgrounds.
Multiple exclusions are separated by commas within the same –no parameter: –no text, logos, watermarks, people. You do not need multiple –no flags — a single flag can contain a comma-separated list of everything you want excluded.
The V8 Parameters: What Is New in 2026
V8 and V8.1 introduced several parameters that did not exist in previous versions and that change what is possible in meaningful ways for creative professionals and content creators.
–hd (Native 2K Resolution)
The –hd flag is the most significant new parameter in V8 and one of the most practically impactful additions to Midjourney since the tool launched. It enables native 2K resolution output — images generated at 2048 pixels — without the quality loss and occasional artefact introduction that comes with post-generation upscaling.
In all previous Midjourney versions, getting a high-resolution image required generating at standard resolution and then upscaling through Midjourney’s upscaler tools. The upscaling process added detail but was a second generation step that could introduce inconsistencies and required additional time and GPU usage. With –hd, the 2K resolution is generated natively in a single pass — the model renders at that resolution from the beginning rather than enlarging a lower-resolution output afterward.
The practical implication is significant for anyone using Midjourney output for print, large-format digital display, professional portfolios, or high-quality commercial work. Images generated with –hd are immediately production-ready at a resolution that previously required post-processing. The cost is 1.33 minutes of GPU time compared to under one minute for standard resolution — a meaningful but not prohibitive premium for the quality gain.
To use HD mode on web, enable it in the Version section of the settings panel. In prompts, add –hd at the end. You can also retroactively run an existing standard-definition V8.1 image in HD by using the “Run as HD” button in the lightbox, which reruns the same seed prompt at 2K with minor variations.
–sd (Standard Definition — Explicit)
With V8.1’s introduction of HD as a prominent mode, Midjourney added –sd as an explicit standard definition flag for clarity. When HD is set as your default in settings, adding –sd to a specific prompt overrides that default for that generation — useful when you want fast, lower-cost generations for exploration and iteration before committing to HD for final production images.
–raw (Minimal Style Interpretation)
–raw existed in earlier versions but became significantly more important in V8, where the model’s default aesthetics are more pronounced and opinionated than in previous versions. Adding –raw instructs Midjourney to minimize its own artistic interpretation and produce a more photographic, controlled, and literal output. Midjourney’s own documentation for V8 explicitly recommends starting with –raw if you want a more photographic or plain look, using moodboards, or using style references to control your style while the default V8 aesthetics are still being refined through community feedback.
Advanced Parameters Worth Knowing
–niji (Anime and Illustration Mode)
Adding –niji 7 switches Midjourney to its specialised anime and manga model, developed in collaboration with Spellbrush. Niji 7, launched January 9, 2026, brings significantly improved coherency over previous Niji versions — fine details like eyes, reflections, and small background elements are clearer, and the model follows prompts more closely for specific character designs. For any creative work involving anime aesthetics, manga-inspired illustration, or Japanese visual culture, Niji 7 produces dramatically better results than the standard Midjourney models.
–stop (Partial Rendering)
The –stop parameter halts generation at a specified percentage of the process, producing an intentionally incomplete, painterly, or sketch-like output. –stop 50 produces an image at roughly half the rendering completion — soft, impressionistic, with broad strokes rather than fine detail. –stop 80 produces an image that is mostly complete but retains some painterly looseness at the edges and in fine details. This is primarily an artistic parameter useful for deliberately impressionistic output rather than a quality shortcut — the incomplete renders are a stylistic choice, not a degraded version of a complete image.
–tile (Seamless Pattern Generation)
The –tile parameter generates images that tile seamlessly — the edges of the image connect cleanly to the opposite edges so the image can repeat infinitely without visible seams. This is specifically useful for background patterns, textile designs, wallpapers, and surface textures that need to repeat. Without –tile, most Midjourney images have distinct compositional centres that make them impossible to tile without visible joins.
–style raw (Photographic Accuracy)
–style raw is technically a style modifier rather than a standalone parameter, but it functions in effect as one of the most useful controls in Midjourney for photorealistic work. It strips out Midjourney’s default aesthetic enhancement — the AI-curated visual improvements it applies by default — and produces output that is more accurately reflective of real photography. For product shots, portraits, and any commercial work where natural photographic accuracy is more important than aesthetic beauty, –style raw combined with low stylize values consistently produces the most usable professional output.

Style and Character References: The Consistency Tools
–sref (Style Reference)
The style reference parameter lets you upload an image and use its visual aesthetic as a guide for your generation. You provide an image URL after –sref and Midjourney applies the colour palette, lighting approach, overall compositional feel, and stylistic language of that reference image to your prompt. This is the most effective tool available for maintaining visual consistency across a series of images — for brand content, editorial series, or any project that needs multiple images to feel like they belong to the same visual world.
V8.1 significantly improved the stability and accuracy of –sref, with Midjourney’s own release notes noting that sharpness and image quality improvements are most noticeable for SREFs and Moodboards. The practical result is that style references in V8.1 are more faithfully applied and more consistently reproducible than in previous versions — an important improvement for professional workflows that depend on brand consistency.
–cref (Character Reference)
Character reference addresses one of Midjourney’s most persistent limitations — maintaining a recognisable, visually consistent character across multiple images. Providing an image URL after –cref gives Midjourney a visual reference for a specific character’s appearance, which it uses to maintain consistency in new generations. This is used for mascot design, character illustration series, storyboarding, and any project that requires the same person or character to appear across multiple distinct images. Character consistency in Midjourney is still not perfect, but –cref brings it significantly closer to usable than it was in previous versions.
Moodboards
Moodboards are a feature available on the web interface that allow you to collect multiple reference images and use them collectively as an aesthetic guide for your generations. Where –sref applies a single image’s style, a moodboard synthesises the aesthetic from multiple images — useful when your visual direction is defined by a combination of references rather than a single source. V8.1’s release notes specifically highlighted moodboard improvements as one of the most noticeable quality gains, with more stable style application and better interaction with key prompt options.
The Parameters That Are Rarely Explained
:: (Prompt Weighting)
Double colons followed by a number assign relative weight to specific elements within your prompt. Writing “Nigerian market::2 sunset::1” tells Midjourney that the Nigerian market element should receive twice as much compositional weight as the sunset element. This is useful when a specific element in your prompt keeps being underrepresented because the model is distributing its attention across the entire prompt equally — adjusting the weight gives you manual control over what Midjourney prioritises.
–seed (Reproducible Results)
Every Midjourney image is generated from a random seed number — the starting point of the noise from which the image is rendered. By default, this seed is random for each generation. Adding –seed followed by a specific number forces Midjourney to start from the same noise pattern, which produces more similar results across multiple generations with variations of the same prompt. This is useful for controlled comparisons — changing one element of a prompt while keeping everything else identical — and for reproducing a specific generation when you want to build on it further. –weird or –w (Experimental Aesthetics)
The –weird parameter introduces intentional aesthetic strangeness into the output — unusual visual choices, unexpected combinations, and results that sit outside Midjourney’s normal aesthetic sensibility. Low –w values add subtle visual interest and unexpectedness. High –w values produce deliberately surreal, unconventional, or strange outputs. This is primarily an artistic exploration tool rather than a production parameter, useful when you want Midjourney to surprise you with directions you would not have thought to specify yourself.

A Parameter Reference for Common Creative Situations
Rather than memorising every parameter in isolation, the most practical approach is to have a mental library of parameter combinations that work for specific creative situations. Here are the combinations that consistently produce strong results across the most common use cases.
For commercial product photography that needs to look like a real photograph rather than AI-generated art: –ar 1:1 or –ar 4:5 –v 8.1 –style raw –s 0 –q 2 –no people, text, logos, watermarks
For cinematic landscape or environmental photography with strong visual atmosphere: –ar 21:9 –v 8.1 –s 400 –q 2 –chaos 20
Also For portrait photography with natural, editorial quality: –ar 4:5 –v 8.1 –style raw –s 100 –q 2 –no deformed hands, extra fingers
For concept art and creative illustration with strong Midjourney aesthetic: –ar 4:5 or 16:9 –v 8.1 –s 700 –q 2 –chaos 30

The Most Common Parameter Mistakes
The most common mistake is not setting –ar, which has been covered in detail. The second most common is using –hd for every single generation rather than reserving it for final production images, which depletes your GPU time budget significantly faster than necessary during exploration and iteration phases.
The third most common mistake is setting –stylize too high for commercial or product work, where Midjourney’s maximum aesthetic interpretation produces beautiful but impractical images that do not serve the functional requirements of the brief. Bringing –s down to 0 to 100 with –style raw for commercial work is almost always the right call.
The fourth mistake is combining –hd with –q 4 without understanding the cost implication. According to Midjourney’s official documentation, –hd costs 4x GPU time and –q 4 costs 4x GPU time. Using them together costs 16x the GPU time of a standard generation. For most images, this combination is unnecessary — use –hd for resolution needs and –q 4 only for genuinely complex compositions that are failing to maintain coherence at standard quality settings.
The fifth mistake is treating parameters as fixed settings rather than as conversation. The best Midjourney users adjust parameters systematically in response to what each generation tells them about how the model is interpreting their prompt. If the output is too stylised, reduce –s. Or If it is too similar across the four variations, increase –c. If it needs more detail, add –q 2. If it keeps adding something unwanted, add it to –no.
